The bulk of the Comings papers consist of the correspondence of Elam J. Comings written to his family while a student at Oberlin College (1836-41) and while serving as a Congregational minister in Ohio (1842-43, 1853-60), Vermont (1845-48), and Massachusetts (1848-53). The Oberlin correspondence covers the preaching of Asa Mahan, Charles Grandison Finney, the lectures of John Morgan, land values, and the financial state of the institution. Sixty letters (1963-64) were written by Elam and his daughter Sarah during their work for the Freedmen's Bureau at Beaufort, North Carolina. Other materials include family papers, writings, and photographs.

Elam Jewett Comings was born on April 22, 1812 in Berkshire, Vermont. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1838 and from the Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1841. After ordination in 1841, he held pastorates in Ohio, Vermont, and Massachusetts. From 1863 to 1864, he worked for the American Missionary Association at the Freedmen's Bureau in Beaufort, North Carolina, educating former slaves.
